U.S. FDA Investigates Cancer Risk Of Heart Drugs

NEWS

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is conducting an investigation into an entire class of heart drugs over concerns they may cause cancer.

COMMENT

The announcement of this FDA investigation will no doubt mislead many people into thinking that any drug shown to increase the risk of cancer will be promptly removed from the market. In reality, however, many drugs are already known to be linked to a higher risk of cancer yet still remain in widespread use.

In a recent example of this, a study published earlier this year in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology reported that men who take daily aspirin tablets have nearly double the risk of melanoma, a type of skin cancer. Similarly, findings presented at this year’s annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research found that drugs prescribed for high blood pressure may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer in postmenopausal women. Other research further confirms the danger of blood pressure drugs by finding that use of hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic drug, substantially increases the risk of developing skin cancer. Worse still, and as we describe in the Chemo Facts section of our website, even cancer drugs are proven to cause the very same disease – cancer – that they are supposedly designed to treat.
