The use of radiation-based diagnostic technologies such as CT scans and X-rays carries both benefits and risks. While in emergency situations these technologies can be lifesaving, many doctors are concerned they are becoming overused.

It is well known that the radiation from diagnostic imaging can cause cellular damage. Multiple exposures to radiation even over a short period of time can cause serious damage to cells and increase the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and many other diseases. A study published in 2018 found that CT scans may increase risk of brain cancer in children.
