More Than 42,000 Cancer Lawsuits Now Filed Against Bayer Over Roundup Weedkiller

NEWS

The number of lawsuits filed against Bayer in the United States, alleging its Roundup weedkiller causes cancer, has risen to more than 42,000.

COMMENT

The mounting number of lawsuits being filed against Bayer are raising serious questions about the company’s future. The cases stem from Bayer having bought Monsanto, the manufacturer of Roundup, in 2018.

Previously in 2015 the World Health organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer had classified glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, as “probably carcinogenic to humans”. This classification has become central to the lawsuits filed against Bayer.

Having already lost three trials in which Roundup was determined to have caused cancer in U.S. patients, Bayer was recently said to be proposing to pay up to $8 billion to settle all the lawsuits brought against it. At that time, however, the number of cases filed was just around 18,000. Today, with the number exceeding 42,000, the eventual sum the company is liable for could potentially run to tens of billions of dollars. In this situation, Bayer’s future is very clearly now at threat.
