A proper supply of the correct micronutrients is essential for ensuring a healthy and successful pregnancy. Micronutrients such as vitamin C, lysine, proline, folic acid, and the B group of vitamins are particularly important. A lack of these and other key micronutrients in any phase of pregnancy can affect the organ systems, birth weight, and even survival of the baby.

Vitamin C is involved in numerous vital functions such as antioxidant protection, hormone production, immune system support, bone formation, and ensuring blood vessel integrity. Aided by micronutrients such as lysine, proline, and green tea extract, maintaining a proper supply of vitamin C can also help reduce the risk of premature delivery.

Folic acid deficiency in a pregnant woman can result in serious neural tube defects in the fetus, which may lead to miscarriage. Crucially, neural tube defects can occur even before a woman is aware that she is pregnant. Any woman of childbearing age should therefore take at least 400 mcg of folic acid daily, regardless of whether she is pregnant or not.
