This study also found that zinc supplements could help to prevent at-risk groups, such as the elderly, from suffering the worst effects of COVID-19. In doing so, the researchers noted that, compared to patients with higher levels of this nutrient, those with lower levels had a greater mortality risk.

Other researchers have made similar findings. In a study carried out in Spain, researchers examined 249 coronavirus patients admitted to a hospital in Barcelona. They found that patients who died had significantly lower zinc levels than those who survived.

Promisingly, therefore, officials in some countries are beginning to recognize the efficacy of zinc against the coronavirus. In Madurai, a city in Southern India, officials have been giving a combination of zinc and vitamin C tablets to elderly and disabled people to help them fight the coronavirus. The city officials responsible for distributing the tablets say they recognize that their initiative will boost the immunity of patients testing positive for the virus.
