The most common orthodox treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) involves the use of pharmaceutical drugs such as Ritalin, Concerta, and Adderall. All three of these prescription medications are highly addictive central nervous system stimulants and carry numerous serious side effects, including a risk of suicidal thoughts.

Ritalin can cause side effects including nervousness, agitation, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, and psychosis. It has also been shown to affect brain development in children.

Concerta can cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, anxiety, irritability, nervousness, growth suppression, and psychiatric problems.

Adderall can cause tremors, hallucinations, muscle twitches, high blood pressure, fast or irregular heartbeats, personality changes, and extreme mood swings.

Fortunately, there is growing evidence that natural micronutrient-based therapies are helpful in controlling ADHD. In children and adolescents diagnosed with the condition, research shows the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) may help manage it. A study published in 2019 found that omega-3 fatty acids can improve attention in children with ADHD. Supplementation with vitamin D has been shown to improve patients’ cognitive function.
