Growing Evidence Of Vitamin K Benefits For Heart Health

A fat-soluble nutrient with a variety of important functions in the body, vitamin K is often simply referred to as the ‘blood clotting vitamin.’ In reality, however, it plays essential roles in our cardiovascular system, bones, liver, kidneys, pancreas, brain, and nervous system, as well as having anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties.

A recent review of the scientific evidence suggests the K2 form of vitamin K can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Other research suggests vitamin K may also promote eye health.

Low levels of vitamin K have been linked to higher blood pressure and stiffer arteries, as well as to serious coronavirus complications. Vitamin K status is known to be lower in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and predictive of higher mortality.

Other research has shown that adults with low vitamin K levels are more likely to die within 13 years compared to those whose levels are adequate.
