“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given full approval to Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine for people 16 and older.” [Source: voanews.com]
The FDA’s full approval of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine comes just a year after the launch of phase 3 human trials, which are still ongoing. Its granting of full approval is also a world first, as until now all other Covid-19 vaccines have only been given so-called ‘emergency use authorizations’. The issuing of emergency use authorizations essentially bypasses the requirement for drug companies to conduct full clinical trials.
Traditional vaccines generally take around 10 years to develop, including safety testing and regulatory approval. In contrast, Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine, which is based on experimental mRNA technology, took just 10 months to develop and was approved by UK regulators in a matter of weeks.
The granting of full approval for Pfizer’s vaccine is expected to result in US institutions such as the military, hospitals, and schools making the shots mandatory for their employees. Many corporate employers are predicted to do likewise. US President Joe Biden has already ordered all federal employees and on-site contractors to be vaccinated against Covid-19, or else submit to regular testing and other measures. Around 85 million Americans are currently believed to be refusing the vaccine.
