Pesticide Linked To Chronic Kidney Disease

Analyzing the links between pesticides and kidney dysfunction in 41,847 people, this study revealed that people exposed to higher amounts of malathion had a 25 percent increased risk of dysfunction. Noting that kidney dysfunction with no known cause is rising in low-to-middle income countries such as India and Sri Lanka, the researchers say their findings suggest we should limit our exposure to pesticides, even in small doses.

For people already afflicted with kidney dysfunction, in addition to limiting their exposure to pesticides, there are also other things they can do. Research published in 2015 found that taking supplements of omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation in chronic kidney disease. The safety of this approach contrasts with the use of steroids or painkillers such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Not only do these drugs fail to eliminate the actual cause of inflammation, but they are also associated with severe – and sometimes life-threatening – side effects, including gastrointestinal bleeding or fatal heart attacks.
