Beginning in the late 1990s there was a rapid increase in the use of prescription opioids. By 2011 these drugs had become the most prescribed class of medications in the United States. Chemically related to heroin, and with similar devastating effects on health, prescription opioids are highly addictive. Tragically, between 1999 and 2019, around 247,000 Americans lost their lives as a result of overdoses related to these drugs.
The Oklahoma court ruling represents a serious blow in the ongoing attempt to hold the pharmaceutical industry accountable for America’s opioid epidemic. It follows another recent case in which the notorious Sackler family won immunity from opioid lawsuits linked to their privately owned drug company, Purdue Pharma. The Sackler family and the OxyContin drug produced by Purdue are widely perceived to have played a central role in fueling the deadly opioid addiction that has swept America. Over the years, Purdue has reportedly made over $30 billion from sales of OxyContin.
As we have stated many times in the past, bringing an end to this public health disaster requires terminating the pharmaceutical ‘business with disease’ and replacing it with a truly preventive system of healthcare based on nutritional and Cellular Medicine approaches. Merely attempting to fine drug companies while allowing them to continue profiting from death, disease, and misery is not enough.
