Globally, the World Health Organization estimates that 1.28 billion adults between the ages of 30 and 79 have high blood pressure. A major cause of premature death worldwide, up to 46 percent of adults affected by the condition are unaware that they have it. If not properly controlled it can cause serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, and kidneys.

Ensuring an optimum intake of the correct micronutrients plays a key role in the prevention of high blood pressure. Research shows that levels of vitamin C are inversely related to blood pressure, for example, and that supplementing with magnesium has proven benefits. Other important micronutrients for controlling blood pressure include the vitamin-like substance coenzyme Q10 and the amino acid arginine.
