This report describes the product defense strategy of agrochemical and biotech company Monsanto, including the disinformation tactics it used to manipulate established scientific facts and attack scientists and journalists who raised concerns about the health and environmental risks of its flagship glyphosate-based herbicide, ‘Roundup.’

Adding to what was already a growing mountain of evidence against the company, the report additionally reveals the fake grassroots operations as well as front groups, academics, journalists, and others that Monsanto relied on to protect its profits, despite decades of science clearly linking glyphosate to the development of cancer and other serious health problems.

Previously, documents released by a U.S. law firm in 2019 had shown how Monsanto had engaged in ghostwriting, orchestrated attacks against the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the hiding of scientific data, collusion with government regulators, and other corporate misconduct. Following Bayer’s controversial purchase of the company in 2018, it emerged that Monsanto had even been keeping ‘watch lists’ on its opponents in Europe.

Costing countless millions of dollars, all of these actions were seemingly carried out by Monsanto as a means of perpetuating the profitable myth that herbicides and pesticides are safe and necessary in order to feed the world.
