An essential mineral that plays numerous important roles in the body, magnesium is a cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions that are essential for health. Its main functions include helping to regulate the function of the nervous system, including muscle contractions and the transmission of nerve impulses; maintaining a healthy heartbeat; regulating blood pressure; supporting the development and maintenance of healthy bones; and helping to regulate blood sugar levels.

Recent research suggests that magnesium supplements may be an alternative to antidepressant drugs. A study published in 2017 found that daily supplementation with magnesium leads to a significant decrease in depression and anxiety symptoms regardless of a patient’s age, gender, baseline severity of depression, or use of antidepressant drugs.

When taken along with daily doses of vitamin D3 and vitamin B12, magnesium supplements have also been shown to help reduce the severity of disease in older patients with COVID-19.
