Throughout the pandemic, the public was repeatedly warned that even people who don’t have any COVID-19 symptoms could still unknowingly be infected and transmit the virus to others. However, a paper from researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine and Stanford Hospitals suggests that transmission from asymptomatic people is actually far less common than we were led to believe.

Using a special test that is able to show whether someone is capable of infecting others, the Stanford researchers found that 96 percent of people who were PCR-positive but without symptoms were not infectious. Standard PCR tests cannot determine this. Nevertheless, despite the new test being available as early as May 2020, government health authorities around the world failed to make it publicly available. Had they done so, the need for lockdowns, quarantining people, and the consequent damage to the global economy could have been dramatically reduced.

But the failure to utilize this test was hardly the only public health policy failure during the pandemic, as a recent analysis of 78 studies and 1 million people revealed that face masks made ‘little to no difference’ to COVID-19 infection or death rates. Similarly, a study by Johns Hopkins University has found that lockdowns only prevented 0.2 percent of COVID-19 deaths and were “not an effective way of reducing mortality rates during a pandemic.” This same study also found that border closures were even less effective in saving lives than the lockdowns themselves, with mortality rates being reduced by just 0.1 percent.
