A significant victory for the Mexican government, the legal dispute began following President Andrés Manuel López Obrador issuing a decree to ban glyphosate – a herbicide classified by the World Health Organization’s ‘International Agency for Research on Cancer’ as a probable carcinogen – and GM corn. Agrochemicals goliath Monsanto, acquired by German drug firm Bayer in 2018, subsequently led a battle in which over 30 lawsuits were launched to challenge the decree’s constitutionality. Despite some initial legal victories, the majority of the cases have concluded unfavorably for the corporations involved.
The withdrawal of the lawsuit signifies a further legal setback for Monsanto, which has faced numerous cases in the United States over glyphosate’s carcinogenic risks. These have resulted in the firm receiving significant financial penalties. Documents revealed during the trials clearly indicated Monsanto’s awareness of these risks, as well as its attempts to hide the public health consequences and discredit independent research.
