Hypertensive (high blood pressure) disorders such as pre-eclampsia are common complications that can adversely affect both the pregnant mother and the fetus. While many women don’t focus on nutrition until after they become pregnant, researchers are increasingly recognizing that it is vital to achieve a healthy nutritional status prior to conception. An embryo requires nutrients from day one of its existence, but, following a change of diet or commencement of a supplement program, it can take a period of time for the mother’s body to correct any deficiencies or imbalances that may have been present.

This latest research included data from over 7,700 pregnant women in the United States and revealed that those with the highest pre-conception calcium intakes were 24 percent less likely to develop hypertensive disorders. Women with the highest zinc intakes were 38 percent less likely to experience such problems. The findings support previous research linking higher intakes of these minerals with a reduced risk of hypertension.
