While being able to predict dementia would certainly be a useful development, drug-based medicine remains completely unable to prevent or safely control the condition. Despite this, new drugs such as lecanemab, an experimental medication that is claimed to slow the destruction of the brain in Alzheimer’s disease, have been hyped by the mainstream media as ‘momentous breakthroughs’. Little mention is made of the fact that the effects of these drugs are only very small or that their likely impact on patients’ daily lives is highly questionable. They can also carry a risk of dangerous side effects, including death.

In contrast to the failures of drug approaches, there is mounting evidence that vitamin supplements can prevent cognitive decline. The use of B vitamins has been shown to be particularly helpful, especially when combined with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, while vitamin C supplementation has been proposed as a plausible strategy for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Research additionally suggests that synergistic combinations of antioxidants may not only prevent but also reverse Alzheimer’s disease.
