There is only “weak evidence” that high-grade face masks better protected health workers than surgical ones in the pandemic, the UK’s Covid inquiry has been told.

Research shows that regular cloth masks allow 90 percent of particles to pass through, thus resulting in them having done very little to prevent the spread of COVID-19. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Bristol in the UK suggests such masks may even have contributed to the spread of the pandemic, as they encouraged the people wearing them to believe they were acting safely.

Wearing face masks has also been shown to cause significant adverse effects. A study carried out by researchers in China evaluated the cardiopulmonary effects of N95 masks, which are said to offer the highest level of protection against viruses. Its findings confirmed that such mask use has significant negative effects, potentially even increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and overall mortality. Wearing N95 masks for as little as one hour resulted in study participants experiencing a decrease in respiration rates and blood oxygen levels. Over a period of 14 hours, they also caused significant increases in blood acidity, heart rates, and blood pressure.
