A key nutrient in the maintenance of health and prevention of disease, studies show that an optimized intake of magnesium can provide a wide range of important benefits.
For example, a meta-analysis published in 2017 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition confirmed the benefits of magnesium supplements for people at risk of high blood pressure. Examining data from 11 randomized controlled trials involving a total of 543 participants, the researchers found that magnesium supplementation significantly reduces blood pressure in patients with insulin resistance, prediabetes, or other noncommunicable chronic diseases.
Magnesium is also important in the maintenance of mental health. A clinical trial conducted in the United States found that magnesium supplements are effective in the treatment of mild-to-moderate depression. Published in the PLoS One journal in 2017, the researchers showed that daily supplementation with magnesium leads to a significant decrease in depression and anxiety symptoms regardless of a patient’s age, gender, baseline severity of depression, or use of antidepressant drugs. Noting that magnesium works quickly and is well tolerated, the study concluded that it may be a safe over-the-counter alternative to pharmaceutical medication.
Other health problems for which magnesium has shown benefits include diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and dementia.
