Micronutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, lysine, proline, zinc, and selenium are essential for maintaining healthy skin. Levels of vitamin D in patients suffering from the inflammatory skin disease psoriasis have been shown to be seven times lower than in healthy people, for example. A clear link has been demonstrated between reduced levels of vitamin D and the clinical severity of psoriasis.

Vitamin D is also important in eczema, with studies showing that supplementing this micronutrient can help improve symptoms. Researchers have similarly found that intake of vitamin E may lower the risk for atopic dermatitis.
