A chronic disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, endometriosis can cause severe pain and make it harder for a woman to become pregnant. Affecting around 176 million women globally, little is known about modifiable risk factors preventing the disease’s occurrence.
Published in the BMC Public Health journal by researchers from China, this latest study examined data on 4,315 American women aged between 20 and 54 years old. Of these women, a total of 2,030 acknowledged using nutritional supplements, 2,742 were overweight, 1,699 were smokers, and 331 were diagnosed with endometriosis. After analyzing the data, the researchers’ findings revealed a clear association between zinc intake and the prevalence of endometriosis. This adds weight to previous studies that have found decreased serum zinc levels in women with the disease.
