Despite a prior promise by Bayer to remove the toxic chemical glyphosate from consumer Roundup products, Friends of the Earth has found that it remains in many formulations, now joined by newer, even more hazardous substances. The campaign organization’s analysis shows that current Roundup products are, on average, now 45 times more toxic to human health, particularly after prolonged exposure to them. Bayer had originally pledged to eliminate glyphosate starting in 2023, in response to lawsuits linking it to cancer, but Friends of the Earth has found that the chemical is still present in numerous products sold at major U.S. retailers.
Some of the new chemicals in Roundup are associated with serious health issues including developmental problems, reproductive harm, and damage to organs such as the liver and kidneys. Diquat dibromide, the most concerning ingredient, is 200 times more toxic than glyphosate and is already banned in Europe. Environmental concerns have also been raised as these chemicals endanger bees, birds, and other wildlife, with a higher likelihood of groundwater contamination.
