Published in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal, this study is one of the first to evaluate vitamin K2 as a potential solution to nocturnal leg cramps. Conducted in the form of a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, the study involved a total of 199 participants aged 65 and older who had reported at least two nocturnal cramps over a two-week screening period. Each participant was assigned to receive either a daily dose of 180 mcg of vitamin K2 or a placebo.
Over the eight-week study period, participants in the vitamin K2 group experienced a significant decrease in their weekly frequency of nocturnal leg cramps. Conversely, those in the placebo group saw an increase in such cramps. Additionally, the K2 group reported a decrease in both the severity and duration of the cramps they experienced. Noting that no adverse effects occurred, the researchers concluded that vitamin K2 could serve as an effective, safe treatment option for nocturnal leg cramps in older adults.
