Lisa Domski, the IT specialist fired by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, successfully argued in this case that her employment had been wrongfully terminated due to religious discrimination after she refused to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. The jury awarded her $10 million in punitive damages, $1.7 million for lost wages, and $1 million in noneconomic damages. Domski, who worked remotely for the company, described how its 2021 vaccine mandate had violated her Catholic beliefs and that her request for a religious exemption was denied.

During the trial, Domski’s attorney, Jon Marko, emphasized her belief that the vaccine mandate essentially forced her to choose between her job and her faith. He argued that, given her remote work status, she posed no health risk to colleagues. In a statement, Marko highlighted the importance of religious freedom, stating that the jury’s decision affirmed the right to practice one’s religion without corporate interference. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is said to be currently reviewing its legal options and considering the possibility of an appeal.
