In reaching its conclusion that the virus responsible for COVID-19 probably leaked from a Chinese laboratory, the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic reviewed over one million documents. Interviewing key figures, it explored federal and state-level responses to the pandemic, as well as vaccine development.
The 520-page final report states that the outbreak was likely caused by a laboratory-related accident and draws attention to American funding of so-called “gain-of-function” research carried out at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China. Involving the altering of dangerous animal viruses to enhance their ability to infect humans, this type of research has become worryingly commonplace in recent years. Worldwide there is increasing concern over the dangers it poses.
Criticizing responses to the pandemic, the report also concludes that lockdowns caused more harm than good and that mask mandates were largely ineffective. Social distancing rules are judged by the lawmakers to be “arbitrary and not based on science,” while school closures were found to be harmful to children’s long-term development.
