Research is increasingly suggesting that vitamin D supplements may be effective in reducing the risk of autoimmune diseases. A randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial published in 2022 found that a daily dose of 2000 IU reduced the incidence of developing such diseases by 22 percent. Published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), the study followed 25,871 participants in the United States for a period of around 5 years. The researchers concluded that because vitamin D supplements are well tolerated, and other treatments to reduce the incidence of autoimmune diseases are lacking, their study findings have a high clinical importance.

Other research has revealed a potentially important role that ginger supplements can play in controlling inflammation for people living with autoimmune diseases. Published in 2023 in the journal JCI Insight, it looked at how ginger supplements affect a type of white blood cell known as neutrophils. The study specifically examined a process called NETosis, where neutrophils release web-like structures called NETs. These structures can increase inflammation and clotting, which are linked to autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. The researchers discovered that when healthy people take ginger, their neutrophils become less likely to form these NETs. The study concluded that this could help in reducing inflammation and potentially managing autoimmune conditions.
