Pulling the United States out of the World Health Organization (WHO) would align with Trump’s long-standing criticisms of the global health body, particularly regarding its handling of the initial spread of COVID-19. Trump had previously attempted to withdraw the U.S. from the organization in 2020, however his plan was reversed by President Joe Biden upon taking office. This time, however, exiting the WHO is part of a broader strategy in which Trump has nominated prominent critics of the organization to key public health roles in his administration.
Such critics include Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a natural health advocate and nephew of former U.S. president John F. Kennedy, who has been nominated for the position of Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). This appointment would place him in charge of key health agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Significantly, therefore, Kennedy has already publicly committed to clearing out ‘entire departments’ at the FDA, deeming them unnecessary.
