A chronic condition that develops following infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, so-called ‘long COVID’ includes a wide range of symptoms that can last for weeks, months, or even years. Extreme tiredness (fatigue) is particularly common.
Seeking a treatment for the condition, a systematic review published in the journal Nutrients in 2021 examined the feasibility of using high-dose intravenous (IV) vitamin C. Reviewing 9 clinical studies involving a total of 720 participants, the authors found that treatment with vitamin C resulted in a significant reduction in fatigue. Other symptoms such as sleep disturbances, lack of concentration, depression, and pain were also frequently alleviated.
Noting that vitamin C deficiency has been demonstrated in COVID-19 and other acute severe infections, the authors suggested that high-dose IV administration of this vital nutrient may be a suitable treatment option for patients afflicted with conditions such as post-viral fatigue or long COVID.
To read how a 2023 meta-analysis of 11 clinical trials confirmed that vitamin C has ‘significant mortality benefits’ in COVID-19, see this article on our website.
