The move to take back troops discharged over refusing COVID-19 vaccines aligns with a recent executive order signed by President Donald Trump. While a previous attempt in 2023 saw only 113 out of over 8,200 discharged service members rejoin, this new effort includes incentives such as back pay, benefits, and restoration of rank.

Troops discharged solely for vaccine refusal will have 60 days from receiving their back pay estimates to decide on reenlistment, with the offer expiring after one year. Those who voluntarily left to avoid the vaccine can also seek to return but must submit a statement confirming their reason for leaving; however, they will not receive back pay.

The U.S. military originally mandated the COVID-19 vaccine in August 2021 under then-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. However, the policy was rescinded in January 2023. Since the previous reinstatement offer, reenlistment numbers have remained low, with only small percentages of discharged personnel opting to return across the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. It remains uncertain how many more will accept the new offer.
