The new commission is tasked with investigating the root causes of America’s rising chronic disease rates. Towards this goal, Trump has given Kennedy broad authority to engage in “fresh thinking,” with the task force to focus on factors including diet, environmental exposures, corporate influence, and government policy. An initial assessment will be released within 100 days, followed by a strategic report outlining solutions.

The investigation will study the effects of various exposures, including artificial chemicals and food additives, as well as addressing concerns about pharmaceuticals such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and weight-loss drugs. Additionally, the commission will work with farmers on food system reforms and explore expanding healthcare coverage options. With its members including officials from multiple government agencies, the Trump administration is hoping the results will help restore public trust in scientific institutions. Meantime, one thing is already for sure in that opposition from the pharmaceutical industry and its stakeholders is guaranteed.
