Health officials have issued a safety alert regarding vaccines against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) given to elderly individuals and pregnant women, warning of a potential link to Guillain-Barré syndrome. A neurological disorder that can cause nerve damage and paralysis, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that two particular RSV vaccines – Abrysvo and Arexvy – are associated with an increased risk of the condition.
Guillain-Barré syndrome can cause temporary or, in some cases, permanent nerve damage. The syndrome is not well understood but is believed to be triggered by an immune system reaction to infections or certain vaccines. In addition to the link with RSV vaccines, an association with some COVID-19 vaccines has also been reported. Research suggests that serum folate levels are correlated with the progression, duration, and severity of the syndrome.
