Published in the JAMA Network Open journal, this study analyzed data from over 2,500 women diagnosed with breast cancer. Providing compelling evidence regarding the damaging effects of chemotherapy, the study found that compared to other cancer treatments, it results in higher levels of fatigue and a reduced ability to perform daily activities such as walking, carrying groceries, or climbing stairs.

While all the cancer survivors in this study showed at least some level of physical decline within two years of diagnosis, women given chemotherapy clearly suffered the most significant and long-lasting negative effects.

Among women treated with hormone therapies, only those taking aromatase inhibitors showed signs of physical decline, as these drugs reduce estrogen levels by blocking the enzyme responsible for converting other hormones into estrogen.
