The concerns raised here relate to titanium dioxide (TiO2), a chemical commonly found in sunscreen that has become widely used in various food products. Also found in industrial and consumer goods, including cosmetics, paints, and plastics, TiO2 is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a food coloring provided it does not exceed 1 percent of a food’s weight. However, growing scrutiny over the chemical’s safety has led to legislative actions, including a proposed California ban on its use in public school meals and its prohibition by the European Union in 2022.

Research suggests that TiO2 nanoparticles may pose health risks by entering human cells and potentially harming internal organs. Animal studies indicate that these particles can damage the liver, immune and reproductive systems, as well as DNA. Other findings suggest TiO2 could negatively impact gut health by disrupting beneficial bacteria and increasing gut inflammation. A recent study of 35 adults found that individuals with higher TiO2 levels in their stool exhibited increased gut inflammation and permeability, which may heighten the risk of nutrient deficiencies, colon cancer, and chronic inflammation.

To read how research has found that using sunscreen for even as little as a single day causes certain chemicals from it to enter the body at risky levels, see this news story on our website.
