Several states are moving to restrict or ban mRNA vaccines, citing increasing concerns about their safety. Legislatures in Iowa, Idaho, Montana, Florida, Texas, and Kentucky have introduced bills that range from banning mRNA vaccines entirely to prohibiting their use in children. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken a leading role, urging the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to halt recommendations for mRNA COVID-19 vaccines in children and working to extend his state’s prohibition on vaccine mandates.
The proposed bills reflect a growing wave of vaccine skepticism now spreading across the United States. Iowa is pursuing one of the strongest measures, proposing a full ban on mRNA vaccines with penalties for violations. In Idaho, a regional health district has already stopped administering COVID-19 mRNA shots, while the state legislature is currently considering a decade-long ban.
At the federal level, the Trump administration is reinforcing these state-level efforts by cutting funding for vaccine research and revoking contracts related to mRNA development. The administration is reconsidering a $590 million contract for Moderna’s mRNA-based bird flu vaccine and has canceled grants focused on studying so-called ‘vaccine hesitancy’.
