Scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the facility in China suspected to be the origin of the coronavirus pandemic, have identified a new bat virus, HKU5-CoV-2, that shares similarities with SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. The new virus has been found to infect human cells and is closely related to Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), a disease with a high fatality rate. Experts are raising concerns over plans for experiments involving humanized mice to study the virus. Such research resembles the type of work that many people now believe may have triggered the COVID-19 outbreak.

Molecular biologist Dr. Alina Chan and other experts familiar with this field of research warn that the Wuhan facility’s biosafety measures may not be sufficient for handling such dangerous pathogens. They argue that any experiments involving HKU5-CoV-2 should be conducted under the highest biosafety protocols possible, ideally in a remote facility rather than in a city of over 8 million people. The research paper announcing the discovery of the new virus specifically acknowledges its potential to spill over into humans.
