The economic impact of air pollution is now known to be significant, amounting to around 5 percent of global GDP and involving health-related costs, reduced productivity, and lower life expectancy. The World Bank’s new report, ‘Accelerating Access to Clean Air on a Livable Planet’, emphasizes the need for integrated policy approaches that tackle air pollution alongside other objectives, such as energy independence and emission reduction. Such policies are claimed to be capable of halving the number of people exposed to harmful air pollution by 2040, with potential global economic benefits estimated to reach up to $2.4 trillion.
