A number of studies already now link the development of autism to micronutrient deficiencies. In addition to a lack of vitamin D during pregnancy, for example, research has shown that decreased brain levels of vitamin B12 may play a role. Autism is also associated with zinc deficiency in childhood. Other possible causes include prenatal exposure to pharmaceutical drugs such as acetaminophen (paracetamol).
Towards preventing autism, research shows that mothers who take multivitamins during pregnancy may lower the risk in their offspring. Similarly, in preterm toddlers, giving supplements of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids may improve the condition.
