The withdrawal of the United States from the WHO, initiated by President Donald Trump in January, has left the outfit with a substantial funding gap. The U.S. had previously been contributing around 18 percent of the pharma-controlled global body’s total budget. Faced with this loss, the WHO is reportedly considering slashing its 2026-2027 budget from $5.3 billion to $4.2 billion, a reduction of $1.1 billion.
Said to be desperately seeking alternative funding sources from wealthy private donors and others, a final decision on budget and workforce reductions is expected by the end of April. But whatever happens next, it is clear that the WHO no longer represents the interests of patients. The time has therefore come for it to be replaced with a new independent global body tasked with the goal of making natural preventive health a human right. The sooner this happens, the better.
