Imagine a cancer diagnosis that doesn’t lead to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgery, but instead to a remarkable recovery driven by a simple vitamin. This is the story of a molecular biologist who, diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia at the age of 59, defied the odds by achieving complete remission using high-dose injections of methylcobalamin, a form of vitamin B12. His journey, detailed in a new case report published in the Cancer Reports journal, highlights a potential new avenue for treating this common type of leukemia, challenging the dogma of conventional approaches and providing further evidence of the effectiveness and safety of natural therapies.
The patient, a former researcher at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, was diagnosed in 2007 with early-stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a slow-progressing cancer affecting the blood and bone marrow. This form of leukemia often prompts a ‘watch and wait’ strategy, as no standard treatment exists for its early stages. Even later-stage therapies, such as chemotherapy or newer immunotherapies, rarely offer a cure.
Dissatisfied with a passive approach, the patient decided to pursue an experimental path. After specialized testing in Greece to determine his cancer’s genetic profile, he began using a personalized regimen of natural therapies. These included vitamin C, alpha lipoic acid, quercetin, green tea extract, and curcumin, along with daily 1 mg injections of hydroxocobalamin (a form of vitamin B12). For several years this seemed to stabilize his condition, with his lymphocyte counts – which were elevated due to the chronic lymphocytic leukemia – remaining steady but not decreasing.
The turning point came in 2014 when, after noticing a gradual rise in his lymphocyte counts, the patient switched to using the methylcobalamin form of vitamin B12 at a significantly higher dose of 50 mg daily, administered intramuscularly. This change was informed by research suggesting that methylcobalamin has potent anti-cancer properties. The safety of such doses is well-established, with studies showing no adverse effects even at the higher amounts used for conditions such as multiple sclerosis. Within weeks, the patient’s lymphocyte counts began to drop, inching toward normal.
But the real breakthrough occurred in 2019, when a severe urinary tract infection struck. As the infection resisted initial antibiotics and triggered complications, the man temporarily tripled his methylcobalamin dose to 150 mg daily. The results were dramatic. By the following month, his lymphocyte counts had normalized. Subsequent tests in 2023 and 2024 confirmed no trace of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. In effect, the patient was cured.
Discussing the story, Carmen Wheatley, the case report’s author, stresses the importance of using the correct form and dosage of vitamin B12. While the patient’s initial use of low-dose hydroxocobalamin stabilized his condition, it did not achieve remission. Only the switch to high-dose methylcobalamin, backed by decades of research showing its superior anti-cancer effects, led to a cure. Studies show that high doses of the active coenzyme forms of vitamin B12, methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin, can overwhelm cancer cells’ defenses, promoting apoptosis (cell death) and enhancing immune surveillance.
The implications of this well-documented case report are potentially profound. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia, while often manageable, lacks a definitive cure, and spontaneous remissions are exceedingly rare, occurring in just 0.6 percent of cases. Moreover, conventional treatments carry significant side effects and don’t work for everybody. The use of effective, safe, natural, affordable options like methylcobalamin could ultimately therefore transform early-stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia management, and potentially even other blood cancers as well. Towards this goal, scientists at the Dr. Rath Research Institute have already demonstrated that a specific combination of micronutrients can modify all aspects of leukemia, including inhibiting growth and inflammation factors.
Without doubt, this patient’s triumph offers a beacon of hope. Now aged 76, he remains cancer-free, a testament to the power of informed self-experimentation and the potential of vitamin B12. Could this humble nutrient hold the key to helping unlock cures for rare and difficult-to-treat cancers? Only time and further research will tell, but the possibility is undeniably exciting.
