A 10-week program, which included treadmill walks, steady cycling, and high-intensity intervals, this study was conducted in the UK during the low-sunlight months from October to April. Compared to a 25 percent drop in the non-exercising group, participants who exercised experienced only a 15 percent drop in their overall vitamin D levels while completely preserving levels of the nutrient’s active form.
Significantly, the benefits of exercise were independent of body weight changes or supplementation, indicating that the activity itself improves vitamin D metabolism. With over 50 adults participating in a rigorously controlled trial, the findings point to regular exercise as a powerful and practical strategy for maintaining vitamin D levels, particularly in overweight individuals or those with obesity.
