This latest outbreak of Ebola, which began with the death of a male nurse in late January, was caused by the Sudan strain of the virus – a variant for which no approved vaccine currently exists. The Ugandan Ministry of Health announced the end of the outbreak after 42 days without any new cases, marking a critical milestone in disease containment. As of early March, the ministry had reported at least ten cases of the disease and two deaths.

This marks Uganda’s ninth Ebola outbreak since the virus was first reported in the country in 2000. Due to its tropical climate and proximity to heavily affected regions like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda is particularly vulnerable to recurring outbreaks of the disease. The virus, known for its high fatality rate, spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids. Symptoms typically include internal and external bleeding, vomiting blood, and severe muscle pain.
