Tooth root infections, also known as chronic apical periodontitis, occur when untreated tooth decay allows bacteria to reach the root tip, causing inflammation and bone loss. In this study, the researchers found that exercise and omega-3 fatty acids worked together to strengthen the immune system’s response, limit infection spread, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue repair around the infected root.

The research was carried out in rats, where 30 animals were divided into three groups: one with no treatment, one that exercised by swimming, and one that both exercised and received omega-3. While swimming alone led to less inflammation and bone damage than no treatment, the combination of swimming and omega-3 showed the best results. This group had the lowest levels of inflammatory markers and fewer bone-resorbing cells, suggesting less damage to the bone supporting the teeth.

Scans confirmed that the rats who exercised and took omega-3 supplements experienced the least bone loss around their teeth. The researchers say this points to a strong potential benefit for oral health, especially since chronic tooth root infections can worsen conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, and vice versa. The findings add to growing evidence that lifestyle changes like physical activity and a healthy diet can have wide-ranging effects on both oral and overall health.
