A leading country in the opposition to genetically modified organisms (GMOs), Switzerland is set to extend its ban on cultivating them until the end of 2030. The moratorium, originally introduced in 2005, had been due to expire at the end of this year.
The Swiss Senate voted overwhelmingly in favor of the extension, with no opposition and only two abstentions. The House of Representatives had already supported the measure during its spring session.
Initially, the House proposed a shorter extension until 2027, but the government recommended a longer five-year period to allow for more thorough discussion. Both legislative chambers have now agreed to this extended timeline.
