Based on a recent report by the Pesticide Action Network UK, the Women’s Environmental Network, and the Pesticide Collaboration, this news story reveals that tampons contain glyphosate, a toxic pesticide linked to cancer, at levels 40 times higher than the legal limit for drinking water in the UK. The presence of glyphosate in menstrual products is believed to stem from weedkillers used in cotton production. Globally, around 300 pesticides are employed in cotton farming, with approximately a third – including glyphosate – classified as highly hazardous and posing significant risks to both human health and the environment.

The environmental impact of such pesticides is substantial, as they harm pollinators, wildlife, as well as contaminating water and soil. Beyond glyphosate, previous studies have identified other harmful substances in period products, including phthalates, dioxins, volatile organic compounds, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS or ‘forever chemicals’), and heavy metals such as lead and arsenic. These chemicals are associated with increased risks of reproductive and hormonal disorders, such as endometriosis, infertility, and cancer.
