Looking at 1,344 young people between the ages of 6 and 19, this study measured vitamin C levels through blood tests and asked participants whether they had experienced a respiratory infection during the past month. The results showed that 238 of the participants (17.7 percent) had recently suffered such an infection.
Young people with higher vitamin C levels were found to be less likely to have had infections. Specifically, for every 10-unit increase in vitamin C, the risk of infection dropped by 7 percent. This connection held true even when the researchers accounted for factors like age, sex, and health conditions. The findings were also consistent across different groups, confirming vitamin C’s protective effect.
