The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has recently seen a rise in reports of pancreatic problems, with nearly 400 cases linked to GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy and Ozempic (semaglutide) – some of which have been fatal. Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas that can cause severe abdominal pain, nausea and fever, often requiring hospital treatment.
According to patient information leaflets, pancreatitis is listed as an “uncommon” side-effect of the injections, affecting around one in 100 patients. However, more than a quarter of the total cases have been reported just this year, with Mounjaro accounting for almost half of all the reports. An MHRA spokesperson said they are seeing an increase in both the use of these drugs and related reports of acute pancreatitis, raising concerns about whether certain patients might be at higher risk.
