Despite repeated calls by the British Medical Association (BMA) to ban vending machines from selling junk foods in hospitals, such products remain widely available to patients, staff, and visitors. Medical experts have condemned the practice, warning that hospitals should be promoting health, not enabling poor diets. BMA Board of Science Chair Professor David Strain has accused Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) of “undermining public health messages” by selling high-sugar products in settings intended for healthcare and recovery.

The controversy comes as research has found that ultra-processed foods now make up over half of the average UK diet, as well as being tied to more than 124,000 preventable deaths annually in the United States.
