This new United Nations (UN) analysis warns of a dramatic surge in hunger across Africa and the Middle East. Titled the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2025 (SOFI) report, it shows that in 2024, more than 307 million people in Africa (over 20 percent of the region’s population) faced hunger, with 39 million people (nearly 13 percent of the population) in the Greater Middle East similarly affected. Worldwide, the report estimates that up to 720 million people, corresponding to 8.8 percent of the global population, may have faced hunger in 2024.

According to UN officials, the overlapping crises of war, economic shocks, and environmental disruption are severely destabilizing food systems and driving widespread hardship. Small-scale farmers, who produce up to 70 percent of Africa’s food, are especially vulnerable. The situation is particularly severe in conflict zones, where food chains are disrupted and populations face catastrophic hunger.

According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), more than 35 million people around the world are currently in emergency conditions, and nearly 2 million are in “catastrophe,” the most extreme level of food insecurity. The Gaza Strip has become the worst-affected area ever recorded, with 100 percent of its population – over 1.1 million people – now acutely food insecure, double the number from 2023. South Sudan, Sudan, Yemen, and Haiti also face dire conditions.
