Kennedy approved the removal of the mercury-based preservative thimerosal from flu vaccines distributed in the United States following a recommendation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The committee voted in favor of providing only single-dose, mercury-free flu vaccines to all children under 18, pregnant women, and adults. Kennedy called the move a “long-overdue” step to eliminate unnecessary mercury exposure and pointed out that safer alternatives exist.
The approval brings the United States in line with Europe, where mercury preservatives have already been eliminated from vaccines.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has accepted a recommendation to remove the mercury-based preservative thimerosal from all influenza vaccines distributed in the United States.
