When carrying out this study, scientists looked at how alcohol affects different types of brain cells and discovered that neurons – especially those in the hippocampus, a brain region linked to pain and memory – are much more sensitive to alcohol damage than other cells. When exposed to alcohol, neurons experienced much higher rates of cell death. Other cells, such as those lining blood vessels or supporting the brain, were less affected.

One major cause of this damage was found to be reduced blood flow in the brain, which cuts off oxygen to neurons and triggers stress and cell death. Using live imaging in mice, researchers observed that alcohol led to a 40 percent drop in blood flow in the hippocampus. This stress also increased harmful molecules known as reactive oxygen species (ROS) by nearly 300 percent. However, when the mice were pre-treated with vitamin B1, blood flow remained much closer to normal, oxidative stress was reduced, and far fewer neurons died.

Behavioral tests in the mice showed that those given vitamin B1 before alcohol had about 50 percent fewer signs of pain and discomfort compared to those that didn’t receive it. Based on these results, the researchers suggest that vitamin B1 could be a simple, safe supplement to help prevent alcohol-related headaches, including hangovers.
